AR app offers assistance to paramedics

Being a paramedic of an EMT is the definition of a high pressure, stressful job. Not only are you thrown into a myriad of complex situations, you also have to come up with a diagnosis of the particular patient’s problem and come up with a viable course of action. All in an environment where a wasted few seconds could make all the difference.

A new AR application for the Microsoft HoloLens is looking to ease this burden by providing paramedics with a range of diagnostic tools to help better treat patients in the field.

The result of a partnership between medical software company Exelus and developer HoloForge, the Nomadeec application uses gesture-based commands to allow medical professionals to use it while caring for a patient.

Paramedics will be able to access a range of customisable modules relating to field assessments, clinical exams and patient profiles.

You can watch the application demo video here.

Connected care

The HoloLens can also be used to give a paramedic a real-time display of the patient’s vital signs as the application is capable of connecting via Bluetooth to medical devices such as ECGs, ultrasound and thermometers.

There is also a feature that allows the practitioner to call another medical professional via video conference in order to get a second opinion.

While the platform is mainly designed for the HoloLens, it is also compatible with smartphones, tablets and smartglasses that run iOS, Android or Windows.

The device is an early entry into a market that promises to balloon in the next few years. The convergence of the telemedicine and AR industries promises to create great changes in the way that medical professionals go about treating patients. There is likely to be a lot of money flowing into the sector too, with estimates putting the telemedicine at $113 billion by 2025 and the AR market at $50 billion by 2024. in hearing industry leaders discuss subjects like this and sharing their use-cases?
