Facebook introduces new 360-creation tools

Facebook has released a new set of resources and tools for 360-degree video creation.

The 360 Director page will offer a range of creative tools for creating and editing 360 videos on Facebook itself. 360 Director is now available for both pages and profiles.

The new tools include:

Annotations

Users will have the ability to add text, symbols and graphic annotations to their content from Facebook, without the need for another video editor.

Guide

This feature was previously only available on pages, the Guide feature lets users highlight specific points of interest anywhere in the field of view throughout the video. This means that viewers will be automatically be directed through the content as it plays.

Player Controls

This set of controls allows creators to set the effective zoom level of their video, the initial direction the content starts in, as well as preview how it will look to other Facebook users.

A new community

Facebook also announced the launch of a new community hub for 360 content creators. Partnering with Blend Media, Facebook wants the 360 Community to provide educational resources and events to a growing global network of creatives.

The community hub will allow members to access a range of video tutorials from experienced professionals on a range of aspects of creating 360 videos, such as working in low-light conditions. There will also be a range of events such as creator workshops, that will be hosted by Blend Media and Facebook in cities across the world.

Interestingly, professionals who join the community can also apply to join the Blend Media Camera Loaner Program. This opens successful candidates up to a pool of 360 cameras for loan, including the GoPro Fusion and ZCam.

“Facebook now hosts a million 360 videos on its platform, which is a staggering number for such a new medium,” Damian Collier, Founder and CEO, Blend Media, said.

“Every day, we see the format being used to tell stories in ways that simply aren’t possible with traditional video. We’re proud to be working with Facebook to continue to support amazing creators with exploring the potential of 360 video.”
