3dRudder to showcase foot motion controller at CES 2018

Tech company 3dRudder will be showcasing a VR accessory at CES 2018 in January. The company will be unveiling the latest version of its foot motion controller.

The foot-powered controller solves one of the key problems of creating truly immersive room-scale VR experience: the limitations of space. By allowing users to control their movement with their feet while they are sitting down is not only likely to be much more intuitive then current systems, but it will also free up hand controller functionality for better immersion.

The company, which was founded in Marseille in 2014, has won CES innovation awards in the VR, gaming and accessible tech categories for the last two years.

You can get a sense of how the controller works here.

The foot operated controller has a number of important features which could make it a revolutionary addition to the VR hardware stable.

Firstly, it is far more intuitive then current systems. Tilting the device forward makes the user move forward, and immediately works with the existing neurological scheme that most humans have between brain/feet/movement.  This should make it much easier for casual users to be able to pick up and play VR games.

Secondly, because the controller is used while sitting down, it already plays into the established way that most gamers play video games – while relaxing at home in their spare time. Using the controller while seated also means that user fatigue is likely to be less of a problem.

The company states:

“We also designed the 3dRudder without any mechanical parts so that anyone, whatever their age and sex could use it. Whether you’re a petite female or a large man we use your body’s natural balance and your legs force feedback to bring back the 3dRudder to its resting position.”

The 3dRudder controller is currently available to buy for $139 MSRP.
