HTC Vive 'most talked about headset' on social media, says Adobe report
The HTC Vive has overtaken Oculus Rift as the most ‘talked about’ VR headset online, according to a new Adobe Digital Insights report.
In the 2016 Gaming report, the stats showed a decrease in online mentions of the Microsoft Hololens, Playstation VR and Oculus Rift - but a 115% increase in people talking about the Vive.
The research analysed 20 million social mentions on sites like Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, as well as from 2.5 billion visits to retail gaming and gaming-related websites over 2015 and 2016.
More generally, the report shows that virtual and augmented reality devices have seen “phenomenal” growth in online popularity, with a 548% rise in Twitter mentions since January last year.
This - and the popularity of VR headsets - is being driven primarily by gaming, according to an Adobe Digital Analyst, but more interest from other areas like marketing could yet be seen.
“That’s why now’s the time to test and learn. There are many marketing-applicable VR/AR use cases that can be borrowed from the gaming community, while it isn’t yet a crowded space,” said Becky Tasker.
The general gaming landscape
The Adobe report doesn’t just focus on VR and AR gaming, however, and also examines the wider landscape - which could include some telling signs for virtual reality.
For example, eSports is an area of gaming that’s garnering huge interest - especially in Europe, where they have seen a 40% year-on-year increase in social mentions.
Why something like this is important for VR, is because those in the industry can take advantage of gaming trends to increase the tech’s adoption by gamers who are already interested in this kind of content.
In addition, the report found that games with an open beta before their release sell 1.7 times more units on the day than those without.
And with consoles getting cheaper (10% average deflation every year) and new models on the horizon such as Xbox’s VR offering, Scorpio, it may certainly be time to usher in the next gen gaming era.
