AirAsia creates Asia’s largest 360 VR production

AirAsia has launched a mammoth VR production, the largest that Asia has seen to date, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN.

The production was managed by Takanto Virtual Reality, one of the Asian leading VR production firms.

The production features hundreds of 360 video scenes from across the 10 ASEAN member states: Idonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Unity Technologies nets $400 million investment

Private equity firm Silver Lake has agreed a $400 million investment in Unity Technolgies, according to Bloomberg Technology.

Unity is an important player in the global games market, creating development tools that underpin a large amount of the video games on the market. The Unity game engine is the most popular third-party development software amongst game creators.

With regards to VR, around 90% of Samsung VR games and 53% of Occulus Rift launch titles were made using Unity software.

VR headsets ownership higher then tablets at same stage of lifecycle

Ownership levels of VR headsets are higher than those of wearables and tablets at the same stage of their lifecycle, according to research by YouGov.

The new report, called VR: A Deeper Perspective, found that 6% of the UK population currently own a headset. At the equivalent point after commercial release, only 4% owned wearables and 3% had bought a tablet.

The data suggests that VR hardware is seeing a rapid expansion in the last year. In Q4 2016, headset penetration was 3%, meaning it had roughly doubled by Q1...

Matterport partners with Google to bring VR capability to Street View

Google has announced a partnership with media technology company Matterport to enable the integration of immersive content into Google Street View.

From summer 2017, 3D scans captured using Matterport technology will be accessible on Google Maps and in Google search results.

Users will be able to access 2D photos as well as VR models of the inside of venues.

GoPro pilot programme for VR camera launched

GoPro has launched a pilot programme for its 5.2K spherical camera, the GoPro Fusion.

The company hopes that the Fusion will be used for both fully immersive VR content as well as conventional non-VR video and photos.

As part of the pilot, applications have been opened for professional content creators to participate in the programme during summer 2017.

Facebook winds down Oculus Story Studio VR content arm

Oculus is to ‘wind down’ Story Studio, the company’s cinematic virtual reality (VR) division to focus more on investing in external content.
