Oculus Rift demo coming to Best Buy stores

Oculus has announced its Rift headsets will be available to try out at Best Buy stores in the US from next week (7 May).

The company added it has plans to roll this out to Europe and Canada, but not until the autumn.

US customers can use Oculus Live to track down stores hosting the demos near them and book a slot up to a month in advance.

How Twitter users are becoming excited about the benefits of virtual reality

It may have seen a false start with the likes of Google Glass but virtual reality is set for a revival if a recent analysis of Twitter conversations about the technology is to be believed.

Between February and April Brandwatch used its platform to track 120,000 tweets over two months about the technology. It found that of these conversations the majority (85%) were positive. Only 16% were negative.

AOL agrees to acquire VR content studio RYOT

AOL has announced its agreement to acquire the Los Angeles-based media company and virtual reality content studio RYOT.

With this acquisition, RYOT will join The Huffington Post, another AOL property, to deliver linear video, award-winning films, VR and 360-degree content. It will provide the online news publication immediate access to its VR production arm and its expertise in Academy Award-nominated documentary film expertise.

Amnesty International launches #360Syria ‘virtual tour’ experience with Mozilla

Amnesty International has launched a new #360Syria ‘virtual tour’ website using WebVR technology which reveals the destruction wrought by the Syrian government on the city of Aleppo.

The demonstration, known as “Fear of the Sky”, is powered by Mozilla A-Frame technology, an open source framework which streamlines WebVR development and facilitates simple creation of WebVR experiences with HTML.
